Canning Dock and the Three Graces
Named after Liverpool MP, George Canning in 1832, Canning Dock originally opened in 1737 to provide protection from the tidal waters of the Mersey to the entrance of Old Dock. At the far end of the dock we can see the famous Liverpool Pier Head, where the Three Graces of the Liverpool waterfront stand.
The Three Graces of the Merseyside Waterfront; The Royal Liver Building built by Walter Aubrey Thomas in 1911, The Cunard Building build by Willinck and Thicknesse in 1916 and the former offices of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board built by Briggs and Wolstenholme in 1907.
