Looking up the River Mersey towards the Stanlow Oil Refinery from near the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum.

Stanlow Refinery is part of the Shell Stanlow Manufacturing Complex and occupies nearly 1,900 acres of Ellesmere Port real estate. The refinery can be dated back to 1924, when the first bitumen plant was established on the site.

It was at Stanlow Oil that the infamous fuel protests and blockades, that almost ground the UK to a halt, occurred in April 2005.
